In some interesting news today, it was announced that the Chinese Internet firm, Tencent, has acquired 84% of Supercell. Supercell is known for many hit games including “Boom Beach” and “Clash of Clans.” A majority of Supercell games you can play on a free membership or upgrade to a paid membership for more perks and benefits, although the bulk of Supercell’s money comes from in-app purchases made in the games. Supercell had a value of $10.2 billion and Tencent purchased that for $8.6 billion, which is why the company will now own 84% of the company.
Helsinki, Finland is where you will find the headquarters of Supercell, but the Japan-based Softbank was the majority owner. Once this sale goes through with Tencent, Softbank no longer will be an owner in Supercell and that ownership is all going to Tencent. In Asia, Tencent is the biggest internet company, even though we might not know the name over here in America. The estimated value of Tencent is $200 billion, as it owned Riot Games which is the developer behind “League of Legends.”
A lot of people know the name Supercell because of “Boom Beach” and “Clash of Clans” but the company also has another hit which is the relatively new “Clash Royale.” All of these games have millions of players and downloads, with them all beinig in the top 20 iOS games category in May 2016. This acquisition by Tencent now makes the company the largest in the PC gaming industry, because of the fact the company also owns minor stakes in many other developers including Activision Blizzard and Glu Mobile.
Even though this is interesting news, gamers of “Clash of Clans” and “Boom Beach” should not be worried about changes anytime soon. The CEO of Supercell, Ilkka Paananen said that the studio is still running independently, and this is just a way to open up more people to become players of its games. In fact, this deal could open up the potential of 1 billion new users to the games, which would really increase revenue in the already popular in-app purchases. Whether you by the premium currency or just use the free currency, these games have entertained players for hours regularly. If you want to talk revenue, “Clash of Clans” was the highest-grossing game for both Android and iOS in 2017. The estimated revenue from the game in 2017 was $1.5 million each and every day.
It is still too early to know how Tencent acquiring Supercell will impact gamers of “Clash of Clans” and “Boom Beach” but you can expect more in the games in the near future. The developers and people behind Supercell are going to do everything they can to entice the potential new players to download the games, so keep your eyes open as special deals and events might be coming around the corner. Some other cool things to think about as well is that there will now be the potential for more interaction with players, especially now that there could be a bigger user base of players. This could open up the doors for more multiplayer functionality, but at this point, it is all rumor as to what this all could do or mean for the games Supercell has developed.
